There is tension at the University of Benin, Edo State, after a set of soldiers assaulted a female student at an ATM booth on campus.
According to multiple reports, some soldiers had bombarded the school on Thursday, February 2, to use the ATM.
“A female student who was at the scene was using her phone and the soldiers thought she was recording them. They ordered their female colleague to beat her blue and back. Luckily for the victim, school’s security came to her rescue.
“The soldiers confronted the school’s security personnel over their intervention and students who witnessed the ugly incident created a scene and assaulted one of the soldiers.
“They subsequently chased the soldiers out of the school premises and took to the main road, chanting songs to protest the harassment of their female colleague,” an eyewitness said.
There are fears on campus that the soldiers may be mulling a reprisal attack.
Tension has risen and tempers have flared across Nigeria over scarcity of new, redesigned notes. The crisis has led to long queues in and around banks as citizens struggle to lay their hands on the new bank notes for grocery shopping.
President Buhari has promised to make a decision on the scarcity of the new banknotes and the suffering in the land, in the next seven days.
