Ike Ekweremadu and his wife Beatrice Nwanneka have been remanded in custody by a UK Court following their unsuccessful bail application over organ trafficking charges.
The Ekweremadu’s were earlier accused of conspiring to bring a minor into the United Kingdom solely for organ harvesting.
They were arrested at London Heathrow Airport on Tuesday, June 21, 2022, on their way to Istanbul, Turkey.
Following their arrest, the influential couple were charged with “conspiracy to arrange or facilitate the travel of another person with a view to exploitation”, after an investigation by the Metropolitan Police’s Specialist Crime team.
Sen Ike Ekweremadu is one of Nigeria’s longest-serving Senators, currently serving his fifth consecutive term representing the Enugu-West senatorial district in Enugu State. He also holds the Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR) national honour.
According to Arise TV, the Ekweremadu’s were procuring a kidney for their daughter who is on dialysis, using a 15-year-old homeless donor from Lagos, who they claimed was 21 in a forged passport, with a promise of a better life.
Arise TV Journalist, Rufai Oseni tweeted on his official Twitter handle @ruffydfire “Ekweremadu’s daughter needed a kidney, so he brought in a 15-year-old homeless boy with illegally obtained passport stating the boy was 21, The boy was promised a better life. The former Deputy Senate President has been denied bail.”
The Uxbridge Magistrate court denied Ike Ekweremadu and his wife bail, remanding them in custody till July 7, 2022.
