Female 100m hurdles world champion and record holder, Tobi Amusan has sent Nigerians into ecstasy following her historic achievement on Sunday, July 24, 2022, where she became the first Nigerian world champion while breaking two world records on the day.
Recall that Amusan broke the African record in the process of qualifying for the 100m hurdles semi-finals at the ongoing World Athletics Championship in Oregon, USA. But she saved the best performance for the final day.
First, Amusan cruised to a new world record of 12.12 seconds in the semi-finals, becoming the first woman to run under 12.2 secs, going on to better the record in the final race with a 12.05 finish, which should have counted as a 2nd WR on the night, but was ruled out due to wind assistance.
Despite the slight disappointment of the 12.05 not counting as a WR in the final race, Nigerians were undeterred in their celebration, with Twitter users taking to the platform to hail Amusan’s historic exploits, praising her for being resilient despite the Tokyo Olympics heartbreak, bringing glory and honour to Nigeria.
