Gianni Infantino has been re-elected as the FIFA president during the 73rd Congress held in Kigali, Rwanda.
Infantino ran unopposed, even though he is not universally popular among member associations for several reasons, including his push for a failed plan to hold the World Cup every two years.
In his acceptance speech, Infantino acknowledged the incredible honour and privilege of being re-elected as FIFA president, promising to continue serving FIFA and football around the world.
He also confirmed that FIFA’s income hit a record level in the last cycle from 2019-22, despite the impact of COVID-19, and promised to raise it again significantly on the back of expanded men’s and women’s World Cup tournaments and the introduction of a 32-team Club World Cup.
Infantino also assured the audience that new record revenues of $11 billion are expected in the next cycle, with the new Club World Cup not included in that figure. He concluded his speech by saying that he loves everyone, whether they love or hate him.
