Rishi Sunak, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, has congratulated Nigerian President-elect Bola Tinubu on his victory in the 2023 presidential election.

“Congratulations to Bola Ahmed Tinubu on his victory in Nigeria,” Sunak tweeted Wednesday.

“The UK-Nigeria relationship remains strong. I look forward to working together to grow our security and trade ties, opening up opportunities for businesses and creating prosperity in both our countries.”

Tinubu, a former Lagos State governor, was declared the winner of Nigeria’s presidential election on Wednesday morning.

The Nigerian president-elect was the candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the election, which he won over major opponents Atiku Abubakar of the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Peter Obi of the Labour Party, and candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP).

According to election results released by the Independent National Electoral Commission, Tinubu received 8,794,726 votes, followed by Atiku, who received 6,984,520 votes, Obi, who received 6,101,533 votes, and Kwankwaso, who received 1,496,687 votes.
