The Police on Thursday, October 20, 2022, fired teargas canisters at the Lekki Tollgate to disperse protesters who had gathered at the venue to commemorate the second year anniversary of the #EndSARS anti-police brutality protests.
This led to some of the protesters running helter-skelter and scampering for safety.
The youths had announced that they would stage a drive-through/walk-through memorial at the tollgate in highbrow Lekki area of Lagos, to honour those who lost their lives during the “massacre” of October 20, 2020.
Speaking of today’s teargas incident, Police spokesperson for Lagos, Benjamin Hundeyin says: “Peaceful persons were allowed to move around without interference from the police. Some of them that decided to be lawless and start mounting the toll complex, an action threatening the existing law and order in the area, were dispersed with teargas.
“There was no use of baton, neither was there physical contact. We equally do not have any record of shooting. We would, however, appreciate evidence of gunshots, maybe a video, to enable us take appropriate action.”
