Fans of the Super Eagles of Nigeria took to social media to hail the team following a 3-1 win over Sudan in their Group D African Cup of Nations (AFCON) fixture on Saturday.

The Super Eagles victory ensured qualification for the round of 16 with a game in hand, strengthening their tag as AFCON favourites.

Goals from Samuel Chukwueze, Taiwo Awoniyi and Moses Simon gave the Nigerian side a 3-goal lead, but a peanlty in the 70th minute from Khidir gave the North Africans a consolation goal.

Reacting to the convincing win, some fans hailed the team for qualifying without the usual permutations, like in the past. Others hailed the influence of interim head coach, Austin Eguavoen, saying the team needs no foreign coach.

@Ayomideen That was a good display from the Super Eagles, started strong and didn’t really give the Sudanese much of a chance of a comeback #ssafcon2021

Of course former coach, Gernot Rohr has a special mention

Super Eagles qualified for the AFCON Last 16 under Eguavoen without using calculators or with a game to spare.

This is the kind of achievement you people ascribed to Rohr like it is the biggest thing after Okpa Nsukka …..

Can we ever escape this Nigeria-Ghana rivalry?

@FonofCFC I hope Ghanaians used their 24/7 light to watch super eagles, so they’d learn a thing or two about how to play football. #SoarSuperEagles

You look at the Super Eagles players and you see a team with so much fire and hunger. They are playing every game as if it is their last. As it should.#AFCONwithJuliet pic.twitter.com/K3tOB1VImf
