According to the police, the Arsenal fans didn’t have the necessary paperwork to proceed on such a procession.
Speaking on the arrest, Baker Kasule told Uganda’s Daily Monitor that a police patrol vehicle pulled in front of them and asked each one of them to disembark and climb the patrol car which was destined for Jinja Police Station.
“I don’t know what we have done but we were simply celebrating our victory over rivals Manchester United,” Mr Kasule said.
He then added that “they are 20 supporters in total, all from Jinja City.”
On his own part, James Mubi, the regional police boss and a self-declared Arsenal fan, queried why the supporters didn’t apply for a police permit and protection, in the event they get attacked by rival fans.
“What would happen if an altercation with rival fans broke out? They did not inform police to provide security for their procession,” Mr Mubi said.
